Hello Kambiz,

I really liked anthropology.net specially because of the forum... It's a pity you had to take it down...

Would you know any other forum about anthropology, social sciences or related field?

Thanks,
Eduardo

Hi Michael/Storm,

Thanks for finding your way back here. About the forums and what not, at this very moment it is all blogging and discussing the blogs. I do intend to keep the 'old' site operating, which includes the forum. But I am running into some hiccups with that right now. If that fails, I am considering installing a separate forum software, and importing all the old users into that.

Hope that answered your questions.

Hi Kambiz.

It has actually taken me a while to find this page as I only bookmarked the forum page on the old site. But now I am here I'll have a look around in a few days and see how it all looks. The only question I have atm is does the forum still run or is it all blogging and discussing the blogs?

Sorry Lorenz, hosting a blog on Wordpress.com means you dont have access to the files. It's a bit confusing, but the basic premise is the the DNS settings for the domain forward to Wordpress.com. They handle all the file administration, database, etc. and with that comes zero control on my end, which is the way I want it.

Thanks for telling me about 404's and what not, I know about them. I just don't have control to change them.

OK.

But you have access to the files on your website account? Maybe you can create your own 404 page? It's easy:

Create a file called .htaccess in your root directory with this content

ErrorDocument 404 http://www.anthropology.net/404.html

This means that the webserver will redirect to http://www.anthropology.net/404.html if it encounters 404-errors.

Then create the file 404.html - a normal website and write what you want.

Hey Lorenz, about the custom 404, I am using Wordpress.com and not a self-hosted version of Wordpress. I don't have much access to customizing the site, and one of the things are the error pages and redirects.

Now about your site, I can now access it. Everything works now.

It's easy to make your own custom error page, see <a href="http://codex.wordpress.org/Creating_an_Error_404_Page" rel="nofollow">http://codex.wordpress.org/Creating_an_Error_404_Page</a>

I didn't know that comcast users can't visit my blog. Thanks for letting me know. I have blocked some IPs after spam attacks, but this only affects the blog - and the forum-directory. Could you try to access the start page <a href="http://www.antropologi.info" rel="nofollow">http://www.antropologi.info</a> ? If you can access the start page, it may indicate that the comcast-ips are blocked, I'll try to unblock them then. Thanks for your help!

Lorenz, I am aware of the 404 errors and the problem that has made for everyone who has linked to the site in the past. It has been a hard decision to throw that all into the wind with the move.

I do not have any control with the current 404 page, you know the one that says, "Easy there, tiger," nor do I know of any way to make a redirect work. I imagine it will take a lot of work with Apache and some scripting with mod_redirect which I am not willing to spend time for. I just have too much on my plate to figure out the intricacies of Apache and mod_redirect. I will be more than willing to cooperate with someone who does.... so if you know of any potential volunteers who know this kinda stuff, please send them my way.

Anyways, thanks for your interest. I hate to be so stubborn about not finding a way to make old links work -- but I've thought it all out and it doesn't seem feasible. Sorry.

P.S. - Did you know people, like me, who use Comcast as an ISP cannot visit your site?

Hi Kambiz. This is somehow bad news as all the old links no longer work. I've linked to your site quite often and now all my readers (all readers from other websites that have links to your site of course) get these 404-error message. Any chance that you could fix a redirection? Or maybe you could write something informative on this 404 page on how to find the content?
