If upright walking is so energetically favorable, why do apes still “knuckle-walk”?
Because apes NEVER walked upright. The fact that you see apes stand upright is to immitate humans (which was and is the most dangerous being on earth). Immitation is nature’s most powerfull defense for organisms. E.g. some fish shape their body to make it look having thorns, etc. By evolving to look like humans, apes were able to survive, but that’s all. Today’s wild animals are not familiar with humans. But in the past when an animal saw a creature standing on two legs it knew it should run… And you know that we humans eat almost everything and kill everything stands between us and our survival, so even tigers were threatened by us. (Did you notice that apes tend to stand up mostly when the are about to fight ? – That is because only then they want to pass the threat message). And apes are not the only animal that tried to immitate us.

I’m sorry, but “Money see, monkey do” Is not true. Apes cannot imitate each other or humans. They just can’t. There have been many different studies that show this.
