seriously? what kind of crap have you been reading? chimpanzees walk upright so they can use their hands to carry things and use tools! and why would chimps want to imitate early man? look at us! other then the fact that we can use tools, we have NOTHING to defend ourselves with! so even back in the day when we were attacked by something, if our spear missed, we were FUCKED. Also tigers aren't even half scared of humans, in fact human is part of a tigers diet, when a tiger sees a human it doesnt run, it stalks it down and eats it. Also, other apes didnt evolve the way they did for the soul purpose of looking like humans, we're related numbskull, of course they're gonna look like us. Domesticated dogs look like wolves, not because they're trying to do so because wolves are more scary then they are but because they have a common ancestor.... and whats this bullshit about wild animals not being familiar with humans? we inhabit the entire fuckin globe! how the hell could animals have just FORGOTTEN about us? like... seriously kid. go to wikipedia. read some shit. and stop posting comments like this without knowing facts.

I'm sorry, but "Money see, monkey do" Is not true. Apes cannot imitate each other or humans. They just can't. There have been many different studies that show this.

If upright walking is so energetically favorable, why do apes still “knuckle-walk”?

Because apes NEVER walked upright. The fact that you see apes stand upright is to immitate humans (which was and is the most dangerous being on earth). Immitation is nature's most powerfull defense for organisms. E.g. some fish shape their body to make it look having thorns, etc. By evolving to look like humans, apes were able to survive, but that's all. Today's wild animals are not familiar with humans. But in the past when an animal saw a creature standing on two legs it knew it should run... And you know that we humans eat almost everything and kill everything stands between us and our survival, so even tigers were threatened by us. (Did you notice that apes tend to stand up mostly when the are about to fight ? - That is because only then they want to pass the threat message). And apes are not the only animal that tried to immitate us.
