I have visited the impressive ruins on Lake Titikaka, Bolivia. The place was called Tiahuanaco, a word that for me sounds Quechua (Huanaco = a native sheeplike domestic animal). No Tiahuanaco people is living in the area or ever had living there. In fact, according to Wiki, the name of the people that built the city is unknown. Anyway, I accept your correction. What is clear is that the use of drugs in the Altiplano has deep roots, and when President Evo Morales defends it as a native tradition, he is saying the truth.

No need to be snarky J,

If you wanna be constructive and helpful, I'm fine with that. Actually I welcome that. If you wanna be constructive but a jackass about it, I'm not okay with that... And I won't hesitate to ban you. Consider yourself warned.

Kambiz

P.S. An expert on Tiwanaku, Alan Kolata, refers to the Twiwanakua as a culture, in his text, "<a href="http://www.amazon.com/Tiwanaku-Portrait-Civilization-Peoples-America/dp/1557861838/kkamrani-20" rel="nofollow">The Tiwanaku: Portrait of an Andean Civilization (Peoples of America)</a>."

Please dont. Tiwanakua is a place and not a people, as far as I know. And if you change the title, my comment would be out of place. :-)

Yeah, I know it does, J. What would you suggest I change it to, in order for it to be more clear? How about, "Consumption of Psychoactive Drugs By The Tiwanakua"?

The title suggests that the mummies used drugs. Living Bolivians do it all the time, but dead ones, only rarely.

It is a no wonder moment for sure, from relatively modern ethnographic records we can and have infered that many prehistoric cultures were the origins of drug consumption traditions. I think this paper is cool because it uses a method familiar to many chemists to prove this tradition was active in ancient Andean studies -- I'm all about the multidisciplinary approach to answering anthropological questions.

I agree, the ayahuasca (yeah that's what I meant by the <em>Banisteriopsis</em>) came from far off lands. I coulda swore I read and reviewed another similar paper that described Andean-Amazonian trade networks prior to the Inca empire, but I can't seem to conjure up a link or any search query.

Thanks for the comment,

No wonder, really. While it is somewhat of a taboo subject, it's clear that all societies have their drugs (ours are specially alcohol and caffeine, while German Neolithics are known to have used opium extensively - a tradition that persiste in Europe until Christianization). I am not surprised at all about drug consumption in ancient Andean societies. Not really.

More interesting though is that this was not just coca but also ayahuasca (that's the vine you mean, right?), which needed to be imported from the Amazon jungle.
